Little gestures can go a long way

My husband is not very socially outgoing. He prefers his own company to going out and meeting people. This character of his has lead to many squabbles in our household. Our friends will invite us for a party or a wedding and he wouldn’t go. Even if he did, he would stick around awkwardly for sometime before hurrying back home. We have been married for 30 years so I have grown used to this habit of his and so have our family and close friends.

It was my best friend’s daughter‘s wedding. This particular friend has helped us through many a tough spot and we were very close. The night before the wedding, I fell sick and it looked like I wouldn’t be able to attend the wedding. I was heartbroken, but there was nothing I could do about it. The next night, I called my friend up to apologise for my absence and to tell her that I’ll be visiting soon. So imagine my surprise when I hear that my anti-social husband actually went to the wedding and apologised on my behalf! I was extremely touched. I know my husband is not comfortable in such social situations, yet he made the effort to go when he knew that I was upset. He put himself out of his comfort zone for me. That was the best surprise I have ever received in my life.
