It is overwhelming how small gestures can sometimes mean the world to someone. My husband’s childhood friend is a mechanic and his son visits us every year on our daughter’s birthday. He is a huge fan of the cake I prepare for her every year and he can’t take his eyes off it from the moment it’s kept on the table. Because we hail from a small town, it is almost impossible to get decent cakes. His father often used to get him mawa cake on his birthday. One day, my husband and I decided to surprise the little boy. I baked a cake, exactly the way I do for my daughter, and took it to their house. He was so thrilled at the sight of it that he was literally in tears. I wish I could explain the look on his face. Every time I make something special at home, I think about how a simple gesture made a young boy feel and I want to share it with as many people as I can.
